President Barack Obama Signs Sarbanes Vet Corps Legislation into Law
Washington, D.C. – Today, President Obama signed into law H.R. 1388, the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which incorporated a bill authored by Congressman John Sarbanes. The Serve America Act will reauthorize our national service programs and create a new program developed by Sarbanes – the Veterans Engaged for Tomorrow (VET) Corps.
Sarbanes co-authored the VET Corps Act (H.R. 1401) with Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) to establish a service corps of veterans dedicated to serving other veterans and the greater community. The mission of VET Corps is to provide veterans with a new means to serve their country; put veterans back to work and help train them for a civilian career; and provide services for disabled or older veterans, as well as the greater public.

natural that veterans would be the first to answer President Obama’s call to community service. Vet Corps will allow them to participate in a meaningful way and help smooth their transition back to civilian life.”
“No one understands the challenges facing our veterans better than those who have walked in the very same shoes,” Hare said. “Across the country, vet to vet programs have been extremely successful. I am hopeful that the creation of a Veterans’ Corps can help us improve even more lives.”
Congressman Sarbanes attended the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act signing ceremony where the president signed the legislation into law.
