  Facing her addiction—cold turkey

By Bruce L Salisbury

Back in the 1950’s my mother was a Police Officer in Farmington, New Mexico. She was one of the first three Lady Cops to work in this little oil field town in northwest New Mexico and the local kids referred to her as “Ma Cop” but of course this was more of a compliment than not and was never said to her face.

Mom was a careful and contemplative sort, not given to approach a task without thinking it out, but she was also a lady who carried a service revolver and sometimes an undercover snub nose backup. People would say that her primary weapon was that K-38 Smith and Wesson Combat Master revolver, but she always told me that her primary weapon was brain power, paying attention, and staying heads up.

Near to Thanksgiving she was called to a Grocery Store by one of the Clerks who thought that a lady was stealing a Turkey. Mom walked in and engaged the (alleged) thief in conversation. She observed that the large lady was wearing a very wide and long pleated skirt. Taking that in, Ma Cop also noted that the lady was standing with feet very wide apart.

While they waited for the other uniformed officers to arrive, the lady began shuddering a bit and then her teeth began chattering. Being her, my mom carried on a very pleasant and polite conversation until finally the lady uttered a loud moan, and pulled up her voluminous skirts to reveal a sixteen pound frozen turkey held firmly between her thighs and stuck to both legs.

That lady might have been in the midst of a felony, but as mom used to tell me the story, she would always end it with a soft chuckle and sagely declare: “She quit cold turkey.”
