Question:
Jim,
On a recent visit to the local VA clinic, I applied for my travel pay for the month. I apply one a month because of the deductable I usually end up with nothing but I try. The person at the counter asked if I wanted to see if the deductable could be waivered. I said it would be a waste of time because I receive SSD and VA disability, which was calculated to be equal to $28,104 with non-VA medical expenses of $1,160 and I forgot about my educational expenses of 4K. The threshold for me is $28,429.

Anyways, she fills out the form, Beneficiary Travel Waiver of Deductibles Worksheet, on the computer and yes, I am eligible for the waiver. Was I ever shocked because a VA employee took the time to help me with something I did not know about and that I qualified for the waiver.

Please pass this one as I am know there are many Vets worst off then me who could use the money.

Now what ticks me off is I should have had the waiver when I was only receiving a NSCP and or for the 30% and then 40% before then. I should be 50% of better soon.

and more ... Jim,

I forgot to add that 'education expenses' and 'Funeral and Burial Expenses' can be deducted from the gross. I have $8,400 education expense for this year that I did not include as a deduction. All family income has to be included such as spouse and children, under a certain age, if they live in the household. I live with my daughter who is 32 and I did not have to include her income. I wish the form was available on line so you could view it. There is no number on the form but the name of the form is 'Beneficiary Travel Waiver of Deductibles Worksheet'

The lady who did the worksheet for me said it is something fairly new.

Thanks for you dedicated work for the Veterans,

Wow. Great stuff. The best of what I publish, like this, comes in from readers.

**VA Employees**

When you write to me, don't do it from your work computer. Even if you aren't trying to overthrow the system, using your work computer at any time is hazardous to your employment. This is also true of any veterans writing to me from your civilian employer's computer. Even if you aren't aware of it, your employer probably has a policy against using their computers for personal use. If you're as hooked on VA Watchdog as you should be, get up an hour earlier to communicate and read the latest and then leave it alone at work. Trust me, this is not paranoia. Your employers (government and civilian) have keystroke loggers and other programs that watch what you type. If you believe you have an expectation of privacy in your workplace, you're hopelessly naive and I have a bridge in Alaska I'd like to talk with you about.
**Information about your benefits**

I enjoy hearing from you. One of the things that makes my day is when I get an email with a question and the veteran tells me that one of you referred him or her to me. I can't imagine a better compliment. However, there are only so many ways I can repeat what the difference between IU and schedular is and that P & T may be applied to either of those.

Knowing that, I've written a "Guide To Benefits" where I've tried to answer the most common questions thoroughly. I had a lot of input from some trusted friends who are expert lawyers, professors and writers. Going to 'The Guide' will show you how to file a claim, understand VA math and a whole lot more.

The volume of email I've been getting will soon make it impossible for me to keep up my policy of a same day response. Help me spread the knowledge around and if you know a veteran who has a question about benefits, try stopping by the VA Benefits Guide at http://tinyurl.com/5wxapm  first. There are also a lot of answers and more entertaining reading in my VA Watchdog archives. Those are searchable and packed with 2 years worth of Q & A from VAWatchdog, a source you know you can trust. If the answer isn't there, drop me a note and I'll do my best to get back to you that day.
**A friendly reminder**

I won't put up with vulgarity, slander, rants or nonsense. When you write to me or make comments about my stuff, keep it factual, keep it respectful and keep the language at a tone your mom would be proud of. I'm not impressed by the way you cheat and put asterisks in the seven dirty words you can't say on television (or here) so that you can express yourself. It isn't necessary. I'm not a prude by a long shot but we are publishing all of this in hopes it will be read by people who will use it to change things for the better. Your credibility will be higher and your words will be taken more seriously when you don't have your thoughts chopped up with &*%$$.

If you rant, cuss or get rude in an email or comment, I'm not taking the time to explain what happened...it'll just not be there. Then you figure it out.

The VA Watchdog...and you...now have more gravitas than ever before. We...our readers-you...are known as the people who discovered the truth of the mishandled documents across the nation and we had the courage to break the story.

Today, when you express your thoughts and opinions, you are much more likely to be heard by a Senator or a senior VA official than you were three months ago. Think about that as you write. Hey, maybe it's even time to use the Firefox browser so your spelling gets checked instantly. Just sayin'...

That is all.
