What Is
An excellent guide covering the filing of a claim and general information regarding PTSD is Military Veterans PTSD Reference Manual by MSG I.S. Parrish, Ret., December, 1998. The toll free number is 1-877-VET-PTSD. This guide lists numerous resources regarding where to locate records and how to go about gaining validation of stressors.
Many veterans are under the impression that if they have a diagnosis of PTSD, then the VA will automatically service connect them and benefits will be awarded. The other half of the picture is that you must present a stressor that is specific and detailed enough so that the VA can verify that it actually occurred and you were there or in the vicinity. It is not sufficient to say that you were terrified the moment you deplaned until you left Vietnam. It must be specific. For some veterans, this will be a difficult assignment, as they have suppressed their thoughts and feelings for many years. However, it is my belief that if you are going to begin this journey, you must be prepared to examine your life as to where you have been and what you have done. It can be a very therapeutic journey and hopefully helpful both psychologically and financially as you deserve the support of your government and country.
