White House “Reality Check” Website doesn’t tell the Whole “Reality” on how the Health Reform Bill would Affect Veterans; The Current Democrat Bill Harms Veterans
Washington, D.C. – Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, Steve Buyer, continues to work hard to ensure that no provisions of H.R. 3200, the national health care reform bill, would hurt veterans, servicemembers, and their families.
Contrary to the White House “Reality Check” website, there are still major concerns about the legislative language in the bill that could harm veterans’ access to health care and have not been addressed.
Buyer proposed six amendments to H.R. 3200 to protect veterans from the adverse effects of the proposed bill. Of the six amendments only two were accepted at the markup of H.R. 3200 by the House Energy and Commerce Committee (view these amendments HERE).
In its current form, H.R. 3200, could classify certain veterans enrolled in VA health care as not meeting
“acceptable” health coverage
standards, exposing veterans
to punitive new taxes under
the “acceptable” insurance
definition in the bill. One
of the remaining amendments
would make it crystal clear
that VA health care is
“acceptable” coverage
and ensure that veterans
enrolled in VA health care
would never be subject to a
two and a half percent penalty
tax for failing to have
“acceptable” health coverage.
“It is disappointing that the
President’s so called ‘Reality Check’ website actually escapes ‘reality’ by providing misleading information,” said Buyer. “I will continue to work with Congressional leaders, Veteran Service Organizations, Military Service Organizations, and our veterans and their families to guarantee that our nation’s heroes are not harmed by this legislation.”
Buyer has received support for his efforts from many Veteran Service Organizations. Such organizations include The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, AMVETS, the Wounded Warrior Project, Vietnam Veterans of America, Blinded Veterans Association, Jewish War Veterans, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The Veterans’ Service Organization letters can be viewed by clicking HERE.
Buyer has assurances from House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman that efforts would be made to include the additional amendments prior to final action by the House. (View the remaining amendments HERE)
